Spot the Big Five in Kruger National Park

When you stay in Johannesburg, going on a safari is often high on the list of things to do. There are many options available to you, but perhaps the best place to visit is Kruger National Park. This is one of the best wildlife viewing destinations in the world, and it is also one of the best places to see the Big Five in Africa. Here's what you need to know about planning your trip.

Overview of the Park

The Kruger is one of the biggest of Africa's game reserves at 7,580 square miles. It is located in the northeast of the country, and it became a national park in 1926, making it the first one in South Africa. It is 220 miles long and about 40 miles wide on average.

The park has a subtropical climate, and it is very hot and humid in the summer. Winter is generally considered the best time to visit because it is drier and cooler, and there are also better wildlife viewing opportunities.

Getting to the Park

You can easily fly to Kruger from Johannesburg. The three airports you could travel to are Phalaborwa Airport, Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport and Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport, and these serve the north, central and south of the park respectively.

Alternatively, you could drive from Johannesburg. The distance is about 260 miles to the southern gate, and driving along the N4 will take between three and five hours.

Excellent Wildlife Viewing

The main reason to visit the Kruger is to see the wildlife. The Big Five (lion, elephant, rhino, leopard and buffalo) are all here, and in total there are well over 100 species of large mammals including zebra, cheetah, giraffe and wildebeest.

You can also choose from a range of safari options, including walking safaris, self-drive safaris, hot air balloon safaris and horseback safaris.

Relax Back in Johannesburg

After your safari, return to Johannesburg to relax. Stay somewhere like the Hyatt Regency Johannesburg to enjoy some real luxury and you will also find yourself in a very convenient location to explore the city.

There is plenty to do in the surrounding area, including shopping in the craft markets, and you will also be in a good location to go sightseeing. Some of the highlights in the city include the Apartheid Museum, the botanical garden and Constitution Hill. You can also travel out of the city to ride on the Hartbeespoort Aerial Cableway and enjoy some fantastic views.

Go Wild on a Kruger Safari

There are few places in the world that can rival Kruger National Park for a safari, so make sure this is one of the activities you do when you visit Johannesburg. Even if you don't go on a safari, you will find many other excellent attractions in the city to keep you busy, so book your trip to South Africa and get ready for a great time.
