The Apartheid Museum is a fascinating cultural attraction in Johannesburg. It opened in 2001, and tells the moving story of South Africa over the past century, with a strong focus on the horrors of apartheid. Johannesburg Botanical Gardens


Located a few miles from the centre, Johannesburg Botanical Gardens is a place where you can enjoy one of the most beautiful areas of the city. This natural area is a popular place to come and relax, and you can enjoy walking through the themed gardens.


There are seven gardens in total including the Rose Garden and the Herb Garden. There's even a Shakespeare Garden featuring plants that the Bard mentioned in his plays. You can also see Emmarentia Dam while you are here


The Lion Park


Located in Lanseria on the outskirts of Johannesburg, the Lion Park is one of the most famous attractions in Johannesburg. Popular with visiting celebrities, it is a place where you can enjoy getting up close to lions and you may even be able to play with the cubs. There are plenty of other animals here apart from lions, including giraffes, hyenas, cheetahs and more, and all in all it is a great day out.


The Cradle of Humankind


This UNESCO World Heritage Site is located a short drive from Johannesburg and consists of a large area about 180 square miles in size. It is important because it is the place where many of the oldest hominid fossils in the world have been discovered. Visit the Maropeng Visitor Centre to find out all about the history of the amazing discoveries, which include the Taung Child.


Constitution Hill


Constitution Hill in Braamfontein, making it easy to reach if you stay somewhere central like the Johannesburg Regency Hyatt. It is made up of a collection of historic buildings including a fort that later became a prison. It has a long history, but it is most well known for the political activists who were held here during apartheid, including Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela. It is a moving experience and well worth a visit during your time in Johannesburg.


Go on a Safari


It's not exactly in Johannesburg, but the Kruger National Park is not that far away, and you can fly here with ease or drive here in a few hours. Once you arrive, you can spend a few days or longer on a safari in one of the best national parks in the world. It has a rich variety of animals, and you can look out for the Big Five as well as hundreds of other species.
